Udupi: The government has taken up a plan to set up a cable car connection system in public partnership to facilitate smooth movement between Kodachadri and Kollur, but the project is facing hurdles due to the delay in granting permission for the project by the Forest Department.

After about 5 years of public consultation, preliminary survey, obtaining the views of local residents and environmental advocates, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved the project under the Parvatamala project. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 380 crore. This project will be the first cable car (ropeway) venture in Karnataka.

The National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), which has tied up with the Karnataka State Tourism Department, has prepared the Detailed Project Report (DPR) after a site assessment by a team of experts.

However, pending the mandatory No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Forest Department has hampered further work. Officials have indicated that tenders will be floated after obtaining the necessary permission.
