Mangalore: Successful High-Risk Renal Cancer Surgery with IVC Thrombectomy with Cardio Pulmonary Bypass and Total Circulatory Arrest at Father Muller Medical College Hospital

This September 2025, a multidisciplinary team at Father Muller Medical College successfully performed a Right Radical Nephrectomy with IVC Thrombectomy on a 58-year-old male diagnosed with Right Renal Cell Carcinoma with Level III IVC thrombus (Major Blood Vessel)

The complex procedure was carried out using Total Circulatory Arrest (TCA) via Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) — an advanced technique that allows safe removal of tumor thrombus from the IVC by temporarily arresting circulation under deep hypothermia. In this case, the CPB time was 165 minutes, with TCA maintained for 17 minutes.

This challenging surgery required seamless collaboration between multiple specialties:

Urology Team: Dr. Prashanth Adiga (Professor & HOD), Dr. Nandakishore B, Dr. Kishan Raj, Dr. Sajal Gupta, Dr. Bharat V. S., Dr. Patel Nirmay J.

Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS): Dr. Anand K. T. (Professor & HOD)

Surgical Gastroenterology: Dr. Ganesh M. K. (Professor & HOD)

Anaesthesia: Dr. Chetana Anand

The patient recovered well and was discharged in stable condition after 5 days of hospital stay. He visited the OPD in the first week of October 2025 showing overall wellness.

This achievement highlights the integrated expertise and advanced surgical capabilities at Father Muller Medical College, reaffirming its commitment to providing cutting-edge, patient-centered care.
