Guwahati (Assam) Jan 05: A strong earthquake occurred in the central parts of Assam on Monday morning, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale.
There were no reports of any loss of life or property due to this earthquake. According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake was recorded at 4.17 am in Morigaon district on the south bank of the Brahmaputra river, and the earthquake occurred at a depth of 50 km.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in central Assam at 26.37 north latitude and 92.29 east longitude.
Tremors were felt in the neighbouring districts of Morigaon district, including Kamrup Metropolitan, Nagaon, East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar and Goalpara.
Tremors were also felt in the districts of Darrang, Tamalpur, Sonitpur, Kamrup, Biswanath, Udalguri, Nalbari, Bajali, Barpeta, Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Lakhimpur on the north bank of the Brahmaputra river.
Some parts of central-western Arunachal Pradesh, entire Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and many parts of West Bengal were also affected by the earthquake.
Tremors were also recorded in some parts of neighboring countries like Bhutan, China and Bangladesh, the report said.
People, frightened by the intensity of the earthquake, came out of their homes and ran to safer areas.
