Dhaka, Jan 06: The atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh continue, this time a Hindu widow was alleged gang-raped and her hair cut by two assailants.
In Kaliganj sub-district of Jenaida district in Bangladesh, a 40-year-old widow was not only raped by two assailants but also her hair cut, tied to a tree and demanded money.
The incident has raised concerns about violence against minorities in the country, which came on the same day that a Hindu man was killed in Shariatpur. India has expressed concern over these incidents.
The accused who raped the woman have been identified as Shaheen and his brother Hassan. According to sources, the woman who was raped had bought a two-storey house on the land from the accused Shaheen and his brother for 20 lakh taka (Bangladeshi currency) about two and a half years ago.
The accused Shaheen used to come often to talk to the widow, who had bought a house and was living in it. During this time, he started sexually harassing her. When the woman refused, on Saturday evening, when two relatives from her village visited, Shaheen and his brother Hassan barged into the house where the widow lived and sexually assulted woman. They then demanded 50,000 taka (about Rs. 37,000) from her.
When the woman started screaming, they tied her to a tree, cut her hair, and filmed the scene on a mobile phone and shared it on social media. The assailants tortured the woman until she reached a semi-conscious state. Locals rescued her and admitted her to the Zenaida Sadar Hospital.
When hospital superintendent Dr. M.D. Mustafizur Rahman inquired, the woman did not tell the doctors what had happened at first. However, after a medical examination, it was revealed that she had been sexually assaulted. The woman later filed a complaint against Shaheen and Hassan at the Kaliganj police station.
Zenaida Additional Superintendent of Police Bilal Hussain said, "We have called the victim to the station and registered a complaint. After investigation, the police will take maximum legal action."
