Muscat, Jan 06: An Indian woman based in Muscat, Oman, has died in a trekking accident. The accident took place in the Jebel Shams region of Oman. The deceased has been identified as 52-year-old Sharada Iyer.

The deceased is originally from Thazza, Kerala, is the daughter of late agricultural scientists RD Iyer and Rohini Iyer and the sister of Malayalam playback singer Chitra Iyer.

A former manager of Omen Air was part of a trekking group when the accident occurred on January 2 in the rugged terrain of Jebel Shams in Oman's Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, officials said.

The exact cause of her death was not disclosed. But the trekking location was a steep terrain with rocks. This is said to be the reason for the accident.

Iyer's body is being taken from Oman to Kerala, and the last rites will be performed on January 7 at the family's ancestral home in Thazhava, the family said.

Iyer, who had come to India to attend the funeral of his father, who passed away on December 11, returned to Oman on December 24.
