Puttur:  St Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur, in association with Yaksha Kala Kendra and the National Service Scheme (NSS), observed the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri with a meaningful programme, Gandhi Smriti, held at the Spandana auditorium.

The commemoration began with soulful renditions dedicated to the ideals of the Father of the Nation, evoking his philosophy of truth and non-violence. Dr Chandrashekar K, NSS Programme Officer, offered his tributes while reflecting on Gandhiji’s values, his vision for society, and his lasting contributions to humanity.

Presiding over the programme, Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Principal of St Philomena College, highlighted the simplicity and moral strength embodied by Gandhi and Shastri. He stressed that both leaders commanded global respect through their exemplary lifestyles and ethical conduct, which continue to inspire generations. Calling attention to the urgent need for morally upright leaders in contemporary society, he urged students to draw inspiration from Gandhi Smriti and uphold values of truth, discipline, and integrity.

Dr Monteiro also emphasized that Lal Bahadur Shastri’s principles should be shared more widely with the public, noting their relevance in addressing current challenges. The programme witnessed enthusiastic student participation, with the musical tributes presented by members of Yaksha Kala Kendra standing out as a highlight.

NSS Programme Officer Pushpa N extended a warm welcome, while Assistant Professor and Director of Yaksha Kala Kendra, Prashanth Rai, proposed the vote of thanks. The event was further enriched with prayers by students of Yaksha Kala Kendra, blending tradition with tribute on this solemn occasion.
