Mangalore: “The real love for nature comes when a person participates in different nature related activities right from the beginning. When a student sees the seed sprouting into a seedling and growing in to a plant and later to a tree,the involvement can add so much inquisitiveness to him or her. This kind of deep interaction with nature can motivates the student to protect nature.” Said Devadas Hegde, trustee of Sahyadri College. He was talking to students participating in ‘Vrikshotsava’, sapling planting program. Devadas Hegde has a rare hobby of planting seeds in plastic bags and developing sapling to plant in every monsoon. The NSS unit has been utilizing his favorite hobby for its afforestation program every year.
The ‘Vrikshotsava’ event was organized today (on 19th Jan 2025) jointly by the NSS Unit and the Basic Science Department of the College. During which the saplings grown in the yard of Sahyadri were planted at Pilikula. About hundred saplings of different variety of fruits like Chiku, Jamoon, Jackfruit, Mango and Almond were planted under the ‘Vrikshotsava’ programme at Pilikula Biological Park, Mudshedde Mangaluru. About 85 students of First Year BE enthusiastically participated with a remarkable interest in planting the saplings was observed during the event.
