Mangaluru: The School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru, hosted an International Conference on "Progressive India: Pathways to Sustainable Development and Inclusive Growth,” K. Shekar , Chief Labour Commissioner, Government of India was the Chief Guest. In his address, Shekar, an esteemed alumnus of the institution, credited school of Social work, Roshni Nilaya for laying the foundation for his successful career.
Reflecting on his student days, Shekar expressed heartfelt gratitude to his teachers, particularly Dr. Philomina D Souza, whom he regarded as a motherly figure instrumental in shaping his values and vision. He emphasized the transformative impact of the knowledge and skills he acquired at Roshni Nilaya, which have guided him in pivotal roles throughout his career.
Shekar highlighted his leadership in significant initiatives, including the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan Scheme for beedi workers and his dedicated efforts. He urged the students to embrace their sense of responsibility towards society, inspired by the institution’s ethos. He reflected on his batch’s impactful initiatives, such as the Save Western Ghats March, which promoted afforestation and continues to inspire environmental efforts.
Highlighting the evolution of labor laws and the importance of the new labor codes, he emphasized the need for a balanced approach and the empowerment of marginalized communities. He encouraged delegates to work for the betterment of society, take firm stands, and uphold values that align professional success.
Sobins Kuriakose, Consultant, World Bank delivered the keynote address focusing on the theme "Progressive India: Pathways to Sustainable Development and Inclusive Growth," encouraging students to engage actively in discussions about progress and change.
Sobins began by elaborating on the term "progressive," tracing its historical roots back to the 17th century. He explained that progress is often perceived differently depending on the perspective, emphasizing that it requires challenging the status quo. He asserted that true progress involves resistance and that it is primarily the youth who possess the vision and energy necessary for driving change. He spoke asserting that it is not merely about infrastructure or policies but rather about the mindset of its citizens that define a progressive nation. He encouraged students to adopt a curious attitude as a means of fostering innovation and challenging societal norms.
The address also highlighted the importance of perseverance in the face of challenges. Sobins emphasized that progress is often met with resistance and that young people must be prepared to accept challenges and pain as part of their journey toward change.In concluding his address, Sobins encouraged students to embody the principles of change, innovative thinking and perseverance in their pursuit of a progressive India. Sobins' address resonated with the audience, inspiring them to embrace their roles as future change-makers in society.
Dr. Sophia N Fernandes While delivering the Presidential address emphasised the urgent need for innovative solutions to address pressing challenges such as climate change, social inequality, and economic disparity and highlighted the vital role of social work professionals and students in fostering meaningful change through empathy, advocacy, and social justice, urging attendees to think critically about empowering communities and promoting long-term sustainability.
Dr Fernandes also underscored that inclusive growth transcends economic metrics; it is about valuing every voice and ensuring access to opportunities for marginalized groups. Attendees were encouraged to actively engage in discussions and collaborate on ideas that could shape the future of society. The speaker expressed gratitude to the organizers and participants, calling for a collective commitment to being catalysts for change in our communities.
