Vatican City, October 29: First Cardinal of Malaysia Cardinal Anthony Soter Fernandez passed away on October 28 at home run by the Little Sister of the Poor in the Town of CHeras. He was suffering from tongue cancer in November.

In November 19,2016 he received the red hat and became first cardinal of South East Asian Country and created history.

Fernandez served as an Archbishop of Kuala Lampur from 1983 to 2003.

Fernandez was born in Sungal Petani, Kedah on April 22, 1932. He was ordained as priest on December 10,1966 at Cathedral of Assumption, Penang. Then in 1977, September 29 he was appointed as Bishop of Penang.

July 30,1983 he was Named as Second Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur by Pope John Paul II.

In May 2003 at the age of 71 Fernandez resigned from the post due to his illness.
