kasargod: The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rain in Kannur and Kasaragod districts in Kerala for Saturday, while an orange alert is in place for nine districts. The remaining districts are under a yellow alert.
In response, the District Collectors of Kannur and Kasaragod have declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including Anganwadis, tuition centres, and madrasas, on Saturday and Sunday. However, previously scheduled examinations will be conducted as planned.
An orange alert is issued for Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Idukki, Pathanamthitta and Palakkad. A yellow alert is issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha and Kollam.
A red alert indicates the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm, while an orange alert suggests likely rainfall between 11 and 20 cm. A yellow alert points to the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall ranging from 7 to 11 cm.
Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during peak rainfall hours, and follow updates from official sources.
The administration said further decisions regarding reopening of institutions will depend on how weather conditions evolve over the next 24 hours.
