New Delhi:  The delivery of the Russian S-400 air defense system, which played a crucial role in the Operation Sindoor military operation against Pakistan, will be completed by 2026, a report said.

Russia will complete the delivery of S-400 Triumph air defense systems to India under the $5.43 billion deal signed between India and Russia in 2018 by next year, i.e. 2026, a media report said on Monday.

At that time, Russia had signed a contract to supply five S-400 Triumph air defense systems to India. Accordingly, Russia will complete the contract by delivering the remaining S-400 units in 2026.

According to sources, Russia has already supplied India with four S-400 units under the deal. Russia will deliver the fifth and final unit next year, Russian state-run TASS news agency reported.

According to previous media reports, the two countries had formally signed the $5.43 billion (Rs. 40,000 crore) deal on October 5, 2018, ignoring the threat of US sanctions.

In March 2021, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin discussed India's purchase of the Russian S-400 air missile system and warned that the S-400 purchase could lead to CAATSA sanctions.

Critical role in Operation Sindoor

S-400 air defense missiles played a crucial role for India during Operation Sindoor last May. They destroyed enemy missiles and air targets from Pakistan in the air before they reached their targets. In this way, the S-400 proved to be very effective.

Following this development, India showed interest in buying more S-400 missile systems during a visit by Russian leaders. An official said that it is exploring the possibility of acquiring its more advanced S-500 missile systems.
