Mangalore, May 21: Fishing activities by all mechanized boats and motorized boats above 10 horsepower and traditional boats using any nets/devices in the coastal areas of Dakshina Kannada district have been banned for a total of 61 days from June 1 to July 31.

Motorized engines up to 10 horsepower and traditional/country boats are allowed to carry out coastal fishing for the sole purpose of transporting the boat.

Fishing boats and fishermen violating the government order prohibiting fishing will be liable to the penalties prescribed in the Karnataka Marine Fisheries Act-1986 and will also be ineligible to get state sales tax-free diesel for a period of one year.

The Joint Director of Fisheries said in a statement that this order has been issued keeping in mind the interests of all fishermen in the coastal area, and therefore all fishermen should comply with the order and cooperate with the government.
