Bhopal, Oct 02: A shocking incident has taken place in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, where 6 children have died of kidney failure in just 15 days.
Initially, the incident appeared to be a common problem of seasonal fever, but has now taken a horrific turn, as it is said that the children died of kidney failure due to the side effects of the cough syrup given to the children.
The deceased children are said to be under the age of five, and all the children had earlier been treated at a local clinic for cold and mild fever. The local doctor prescribed regular medicines, including cough syrups. After consuming it, the children seemed to be recovering. But within a few days, the symptoms returned again. Then there was a sudden and alarming decrease in urination. The condition quickly deteriorated and turned into kidney infections. Later, the children were taken to Nagpur in Maharashtra for advanced treatment. but three children died there.
Cough syrup is suspected to be the cause of the deaths of the children, and investigators suspect that the deaths were caused by contaminated cough syrup mixed with toxic diethylene glycol. The turning point came when a biopsy of the children's kidneys revealed contamination with diethylene glycol, a toxic chemical associated with drug poisoning. Most of the children were given Coldrif and Nextro-DS syrups.
Chhindwara District Magistrate Sheelendra Singh immediately banned the sale of the two syrups across the district and issued an urgent advisory to doctors, pharmacies and parents not to use them. Keeping in view the seriousness, the district administration has called a team from the Indian Council of Medical Research for testing and an investigation is underway.
