Chennai: While the Karnataka government is still in discussions about an airport near Bengaluru, the Tamil Nadu government has finalized the location of the proposed Hosur airport. The Tamil Nadu government has proposed a new airport in Shulagiri taluk between Berigai and Bagalur, which is just 19 km from the Karnataka border.
This site is about 15.5 km east of Taneja Aerospace and 19 km from Attibele on the Karnataka border. Sources said that the Tamil Nadu government will approach the Union Civil Aviation Ministry for approval in the next two weeks. This site is special because it is located near the Bangalore Satellite Town Ring Road, which is being developed by the National Highways Authority of India.
This airport project requires about 2,300 acres of land. The Krishnagiri District Collector has been asked to prepare a land acquisition plan within six weeks.
The Hosur airport project is expected to take around eight years to complete. The proposed airport, announced by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin last year, is designed to handle 3 crore passengers per annum.
Known as a thriving manufacturing hub, Hosur is home to over 500 large industries. There are 3,000 companies in sectors like automobiles and electronics in the Hosur region.
Once operational, the project will decongest Chennai and Bengaluru airports. It will significantly boost industrial growth in Krishnagiri district and north Tamil Nadu.
The Tamil Nadu government had selected five sites for study in October 2024. Hosur has been attracting investors in recent years. The state government is implementing various schemes to provide modern infrastructure in the area. The government aims to make it a major economic hub.
There is a condition that no new or existing domestic airports should be opened within a 150 km air distance from Bengaluru's Kampegowda Airport for 25 years. With this condition set to expire in 2033, the governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are planning to build a second airport adjacent to Bengaluru.
