Mangalore: Oscar Fernandes former union Minister, Rajya Sabha member and senior congress leader passed away on Monday Sept 13.
He was admitted to Yenepoya hospital Mangalore in July after a serious injury due to accidental fall during his regular exercise. Oscar Fernandez suffered a blood clot in the brain due to fall, was treated at the ICU.
Fernandes, born on March 27, 1941, in Udupi district, was one of the 12 children born to his parents Roque Fernandes and Leonissa M Fernandes. Married to Blossom Fernandes, he has two children - a son and a daughter. He studied at Cecilia's Convent, MGM College in Udupi and graduated in arts.
He was elected as founder president of Catholic Sabha Mangalore Pradhesh on 29 April 1979.
Oscar, who began his political career in Udupi in 1972. He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time by his political guru TA Pai in 1980. He was elected to parliament for five consecutive terms and later served as a Rajya Sabha member for four terms.Oscar Fernandes was Union Minister during the UPA government. He also worked as Minister of Road, Transport, Highways and Labor. He also served as Parliamentary Secretary to Rajiv Gandhi. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Udupi constituency of Karnataka from 1980 to 1996. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1998 and 2004.
The mortal remains of late Senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes will be placed for public viewing on Tuesday, 14/09/2021 from 3 pm to 5 pm at the Congress office in Mallikkatta, Mangalore. District Congress president K Harish Kumar said in a official announcement.
