Mangalore, May 16: A cargo ship named 'MSV Salamat', which was en route from the city port to Lakshadweep, sank about 60 nautical miles southwest of Mangalore on the Karnataka coast on Wednesday morning. The Coast Guard rescued 6 crew members on board.
On May 12, the ship was sailing from Mangalore port to Lakshadweep with cargo including cement and building materials. It was expected to reach Kadmat Island on May 18. However, on the morning of May 14, at around 5:30 AM IST, it was hit by a huge wave, which is believed to have caused the ship to sink. However, the real reason for the sinking is yet to be known.
The crew on board had taken refuge in a small boat to escape the sinking ship. The crew of another ship noticed this and informed the Indian Coast Guard in Mangalore. The patrolling ICG ship Vikram rescued all the crew from the dinghy, provided first aid and brought them to the New Mangalore port on Thursday, Coast Guard officials said.
