New Delhi, May 14: BSF jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who was accidentally arrested by the Pakistani army after crossing the border, has reportedly returned to India through the Wagah border.

Purnam Kumar Shaw was handed over to Indian authorities on Wednesday morning. The handover took place at the Joint Check Post in Attari, Amritsar around 10:30 am and was conducted peacefully following established protocols, the BSF said in a statement. Shah is currently being questioned by security officials.

BSF jawan Shah of the 182nd Battalion was arrested by Pakistan Rangers after he inadvertently crossed the international border near Ferozepur in Punjab on April 23.

The accidental crossing of the border by a BSF constable into Pakistani territory after the Pahalgam terror attack has brought diplomatic relations to a standstill, with Pakistan Rangers suspending all flag meetings with Indian troops.

Purnam Kumar Shah has been shifted to a Rangers base in the Lahore-Amritsar sector, sources said. Meanwhile, the constable's wife Rajni Shah had travelled from West Bengal to Punjab to discuss the matter with senior officers of the BSF's Western Command.

Wearing an army uniform and carrying a service rifle, he had gone to seek shade to rest with farmers. Sources said that Singh, who accidentally crossed the border, was taken into custody by the Pakistani army.

Such incidents happen frequently from both sides. So this is not an isolated incident. But the incident has assumed significance as tensions have been rising between India and Pakistan since the Pahalgam incident.
