Mangalore:- Inter District Online chess tournament being organised by the Physical Education, Mangalore University in association with Derik’s Chess School Mangalore on 29th and 30th August, has attracted more 300 players from across the districts of D.K, Udupi and Coorg. 

The tournament was organised today on the National Sports Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Indian Legendary Hockey player Dhyan Chand on 29th August.

Honorable Vice Chancellor Prof. P. S. Yadapadithaya inaugurated  the event through his video message. In his address he emphasised for sports among youth and how Major Dhyan Chand is an inspiration to the aspiring sportspersons. 

Deric Pinto, Administrator of Derik’s Chess School thanked Mangalore University for extending the opportunity to the general public and making the event an online festival for chess lovers. Dr. Haridas Kuloor, Asst. Director, Physical Education gave a welcome address; Prasanna Rao, Chief Arbiter delivered thanks. 

The tournament is being played on Derik's Chess School’s website. 

Due to Covid19 crisis, the university has provided opportunity not just to the Inter collegiate players but also to the common public including young kids, professionals who are interested in chess to play from home using smartphone, tab or computers. 

The tournament is played in Open and Women category in 10 round swiss league format. There will be 5 rounds each day. 

Open category has attracted renowned FIDE rated players like Augustin, Shabdik Varma, Sharan Rao, Dhrikshu Vasant and more. Top women players include Andrea D’Souza, Shalon Pais, WCM Shriyana Mallya, Swathi Bhat, Mahima Sherigar and many FIDE rated players. .

In Open:

Top position is jointly shared by 3 players - Shabdik Varma( SDM PG College), Sharan Rao (NITK) and Prajwal P ( Vidyodaya PU, Udupi) with 5 points. And closely followed by younger challengers Dhanush Ram, Aradyo Bhattacharya, Pankaj Bhat and Dhrikshu Vasant with 4.5 points. 

Among Women category, Swathi Bhat (AJIMS) and Deepthi Lakshmi ( Vivekananda Eng Med, Puttur)) are leading a point ahead with 5 points by clinching victories against their higher seeded opponents. 

Tomorrow (30-08-2020) , final day 5 more rounds will be played. Top 5 players in each category will be awarded cash prizes and age group awards and e-certificates for participants who complete their participation.
