Udupi : Deputy Commissioner of Udupi district Hepshiba Rani Korlapati hoisted the flag and received the guard of honour with salute from the marching contingent.

As per the protocol, the district in-charge minister supposed to hoist the national flag in their respective districts. But, this year due to not expansion of the state ministry, the government asked to hoist the flag on Independence day by respective district commissioner's.

Addressing the gathering, Hepshiba Rani Korlapati said that plenty of freedom fighters including Jawaharlal Nehru who got punished and got imprisoned. Plenty of women also had taken part in the freedom struggle for the nation. Rani Abbakka fought against Portuguese, Kamadevi Chattopadyaya, Umabai Kundapura, Mahadevi Tai Doddamani and others took part in the freedom struggle. In the year 1921, Jallianwala Bagh day was commemorated in Udupi. Karkala Padhmanabha Kamath, Udupi Kunera Panduranga Raya, Kota Ramakrishna Karanth and others left their job as advocates in response to the call of non-cooperation movement. Mahatama Gandhi had also visited Udupi and Dakshina Kannada in 1927 and 1934, she said.
