Mangalore: Vermi composting technique is a faster method for organic waste management”
Youth Red Cross Unit of Dr.P.Dayananda Pai-P.Sathisha Pai Govt. First Grade College Mangalore, Carstreet organised a programme on “Adopting vermi composting process in solid waste management”. Prof. S.Hareesh Joshy was the resource person. Speaking on the occasion, he said “It is time for us to turn the garbage into gold and secure the future of our young generation by ensuring proper ways of waste management”. He also said Mother Nature has created hundreds of different species of earth worms, but only a few of these are suitable for vermi composting. Earth worms help to increase the amount of air and water that gets into the soil. He explained to students how earth worm burrows alter the physical structure of the soil and thereby helps to improve farm productivity.
Dr.Joshy further added that “decentralised waste management is the need of the hour. The earlier we can segregate and process the waste, the resource recovering is much better and everyone should take initiative to dispose the waste. He also stressed the vital importance of various educative campaigns to promote the idea of composting and waste management.
In his presidential remark, Prof. Rajashekar Hebbar C said, “Traditionally India was composting organic in farming methods, until we were taken over by western influences. Opting for organic food is an effective choice for good health. He urged students to promote organic farming and to create awareness about the negative impact of adulterated food for future generation.
Dr. Mahesh K.B., Prof. Nayana and Prof. Manibhushan Dsouza, Coordinators of Youth Red Cross were present. Dr.Jayakara Bhandary, Prof.Sheshappa was also present on the occasion.
