Mangalore : Extra-curricular activities teach students to live a society-oriented life and also help inculcate the necessary disciplines, said Mangalore University Registrar Dr. Kishore Kumar CK.
Addressing the gathering after inaugurating a two-day workshop jointly organized by Indian Red Cross Society, Karnataka State Branch and Mangalore University Youth Red Cross for Youth Red Cross Program Officers at Ravindra Kala Bhavana of University College Mangaluru here on Thursday, he said, “Mangalore University is implementing the Red Cross curriculum for the first time in the state. This workshop may help to reach the students more effectively”.
Indian Red Cross Society District President Shantharama Shetty said that the Red Cross is getting good support in the coastal area, especially from Mangalore University. Henceforth, there is an intention to identify three best program officers from the district every year and get the honour of the Governor. Also, there is a plan to conduct national and state-level camps in the district.
Congratulating the Mangaluru University Youth Red Cross Unit for winning the state award, NSS and YRC retired Advisor Dr. H. S. Suresh said that practical knowledge remains forever. Self-learning is the real education. He thanked Mangalore University for giving academic status to Red Cross.
In her presidential address, Principal Dr. Anasuya Rai said that the inclusion of Red Cross under the skill enhancement courses of the National Education System (NEP) is a good development. The activities carried out by the Youth Red Cross under the Mangalore University are commendable, she added.
District Red Cross Secretary Kusumadhar, YRC Curriculum Committee President Prabhakar Sharma were present on the stage. Mangalore University Youth Red Cross Nodal Officer Dr. Ganapathi Gowda delivered introductory speech. Canara College Young Red Cross Program Officer Smitha M mastered the ceremony. Deekshitha of Besant Women's College proposed vote of thanks.
In the two-day workshop, sessions will be held on ‘Understanding Youth’ (Dr. Suresh H S), ‘Dynamics of leadership’ (Mithun Bhat Kakunje), and ‘Communication Skills’ (Dr. Gananatha Ekkar) on the first day. Sessions will be held on ‘Management of YRC in colleges with new software (Dr. Ganapathi Gowda), ‘Importance of organ donation’ (Dr. Sachidananda Rai), ‘Understanding Volunteerism’ (Dr. Suresh H S), ‘Red Cross’ (Dilip C S) and on ‘First Aid’ (Nithya Shree B V ) on the second day.
