Mangalore: Dr. B R Ambedkar belongs to all classes of society. He tried to bring equality and harmony among all. This thought is reflected also in Indian Constitution, opined Karnataka Governor, and Chancellor of Mangalore UniversityThawar Chand Gehlot.

He addressed the audience at Mangala Auditorium after unveiling the bronze statue of Ambedkar installed near Science Block of Mangalore University on the occasion of his 66th Maha Parinirvana Day, on Tuesday (December 6). “Even though he was highly educated, Ambedkar tried to correct the short comings of the society putting his personal wellbeing.”

His contributions are recognized and being honored now. With the efforts of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and many others, Ambedkar's memorial was built at his birth place Mhow. Ambedkar International Center has been established with the aim of understanding him better. Ambedkar's Janma bhoomi, Shiksha Bhoomi, Karma Bhoomi, Diksha Bhoomi, Parinirvana Bhoomi and Chaithya Bhoomi explain the life of Ambedkar,” he said.

The Governor congratulated the Mangalore University for establishing Ambedkar's statue, and hoped that his good deeds would be recognized and adopted. Meanwhile, he assured that he would provide necessary support if a proposal is submitted to the Union government for the establishment of an Ambedkar study chair in the university.

Vice Chancellor Mahatma Gandhi Horticulture and Forestry University, Durg, Chhattisgarh and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University Social Sciences, Mhow Founder Vice Chancellor Prof. R. S. Kureel explained the milestones of Ambedkar’s life and his achievements.He said that Narayan Guru, who worked for social justice like Ambedkar, should be awarded with ``Bharat Rathna'' (Posthumous), and also urged to establish a social science university for social justice and prosperity of the poor.

Mangalore University Chancellor Prof. P Subrahmanya Yadapadithaya in his welcome speech said that social equality is the best tribute we can pay to Ambedkar. Mangalore University Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Study Center Director Prof. Vishwanath offered vote of thanks. Dr. Dhananjaya Kumble and Preeti Keerti D'Souza mastered the program. Registrar Dr. C.K. Kishore Kumar, Registrar (Evaluation) Prof. P L Dharma, syndicate members were present among others.

About Statue: The bronze statue is about 9 feet tall and weighs more than 600 kg. Built at a cost of around Rs 14.30 lakh, the statue has been installed near the flower garden in front of the science block of the university campus.
